photographic negative

photographic negative
A transparency produced when black-and-white film is exposed in a camera and then developed. The term is derived from the appearance of the transparency, in which white areas of the original appear the darkest or most opaque, while the darkest portions of the original are almost clear. With color film the light-dark reversal is coupled with a change of colors to the complements of those in the original material.
